The reader's first impression of this book will certainly come from its presentation. The publisher (NavPress) spared no thought in creating a beautiful over sized quality paperback with color reproductions of the author's and other artist's work. I was drawn first to thumb through the book, taking glimpses or tastes of the book before ever sitting down to read it.

Fujimura is an American artist using Japanese-style painting, honored in Japan and the US. In 1992 he was the youngest artist to have a piece acquired by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo. The subtitle of his book is "A Journey of Faith, Art, and Culture." A better word would be journal rather than journey as the relatively short meditations reflect a personal thought process rather than a thorough treatment. This qualifier in no way discounts the value of the book, but it would more accurately reflect what it is.

The backdrop of these reflections is Ground Zero where the artist lives. This is the reflective mirror by which these chapters are written. Art as a means of peacemaking is a major theme though any creative reader will find some thing to mull over. Not to be read quickly, the book invites time and reflection, a soaking in of the reality of the presence and importance of art in our daily living. For the Christian this book will open eyes to the gracious gift of creativity which needs to be recognized and valued in the church. A creative artistic interpretation of da Vinci's Last Supper toward the end of the book was riveting and thought provoking. "The greatest message imbedded in the painting--that Judas, the seed of betrayal, is in all of us (153)."

During the '80's Fujimura experienced a "transfer of allegiance from Art to Christ which he recounts in "River Grace." Tasting this book draws me to search out his memoir as well.

The elation of discovery when I read in the very first paragraph of this book...*the word abstraction...simply means the act of drawing out the essential qualities in a thing, a series of things or a situation*. This is what the book is about throughout--rhythmic flows and patterns.

Examples from this book include mention of several instances in which the orgonome or teardrop form exists in nature--in the pull of a magnetic field, in the shape of an apple seed and in the form of a ducks body, and how the jet form of water creates the same shape of a common mushroom sliced in half...as well as numerous other forms illustrated that may surprise the reader.

I could give many more examples, but the great thing about this book is that it is no mere science lesson--all the information is given in relation to art and art making. I was so pleased to find this book in the library and after readint it I had to own it. I have many Van Gogh books. This one is espeically interesting since the editor minimized her words on the first page of every chapter. The words after that are Van Gogh's words taken from his letters to Theo and various others. I find it extremelly intersting to read what he wrote about his works as he did them. This is a terrific book.

Japan the Art of Living Review

Regardless if you want to have a Japanese Tea Room, a Japanese touch, or just like looking at great photographs of Interior Design, you should buy this book.

I normally don't like books which take elements from one Style, in this case Japanese, and then adapt it for Western use, but here it works very well, thanks to superb and tasteful examples. The authors are also very up-front about it, as the sub-title which does not appear on the cover is "A Sourcebook of Japanese Style for the Western Home".

In hundreds of excellent photographs we are shown in sections with such titles as: "Light and Space", "Traditional Furniture" and "Japanese Textiles" just how easy it is to give rooms and areas of your home a Japanese touch or feel. I personally like the Style very much because it is subdued, almost austere, yet elegant, and makes much use of natural materials. The book is full of really clever examples of what one can do with space, and the best part is, that for the most part it can be done without great expense. The list of sources of where to buy materials at the end of the book is unfortunately out of date. The copy of the book I have was published in 1990, but many sources should be readily available on the Internet.

Along with the excellent book "Japanese Style" by Suzanne Slesin, et.al. (at the time of writing out of print), "Japan: The Art of Living" is all you'll need to go Japanese. And lastly before I forget, the price is right.

This book exceeded my expectations; I've fallen in love lately with these Dover books of artists' works. The full-page reproductions are top-notch and the selection creates a broad overview of the Art Nouveau/Jugendstil movement by its most famous and arguably most characteristic artist. You have Mucha himself to thank for that, as this is simply a recollation of images from his own book, though the plates are in a different order (for the purists, a chart is included referencing the pages to Mucha's original order).

It's not as thorough or lavish as the definitive book Alphonse Mucha by Sarah Mucha, but then it's also less than half the price and much more portable. There's little enough overlap between the two that it's worth buying both, and in my opinion most of the reproductions (other than the posters) are better in this Dover book. If you're looking for a broad overview and reference of the Art Nouveau style, this Dover book is the one to get, whereas if you want a more focused look at Mucha's work and life, particularly his ornamental panels featuring Sarah Bernhardt and other women, you'll want to pick up Sarah Mucha's book (or perhaps the other Dover book, Drawings of Mucha: 70 Works by Alphonse Maria Mucha Including 9 in Full Color.)

This is unbelievably good value for your money. Though small in size it offers a huge amount of information of art and architecture as the title implies, but also of history and traditions somewhat. Very good print, design and photos, maps of the city and of some buildings room by room. It's a chunky little book, but it lays very well in your hands. If you have the slightest interest in the lagoon city, don't hesitate. I can't see anyone get disappointed by this, I certainly didn't.

However, I feel the rest of the text is superb, and works well for my course, and with my students. I cannot seem to locate another combined art and music book that works better.

As with previous collections, this one is thought provoking and a great introduction to artists that we might not have heard of. One great way to get exposure in the artistic community! A good number of the artists chosen are from New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, and London, with a few from China and Japan, and other towns in the United States. Many of the artworks chosen are performance-based and installation-based. You cannot go and buy their works at the gallery and take them home to hang on your walls. Instead, you experience the art in a tangible way, through performances and displays. There are a scattering of painters, sculptors, and photographers, but they pale in comparison to the performance artists.

This time, it is in the form of big newsprint and not stapled, so be careful, since pages many fall out. A perfect book to read while it is on a table, not so much on a lap. A great book for those wanting to know the future of the world of art.

I was disappointed however in the page quality. I ordered the hard cover edition, expecting the hard finish paper of the original edition (something that would stand up to repeated handling). Instead, the paper is what you find in a paper back pamphlet. Discouraging! A lesson about declining standards in the book publishing industry.

Saints in Art (Guide to Imagery Series) Review

I believe there can be intrinsic value in Art, and for whatever reason, I relate better to Art in which I can recognize 'true' expressions of 'the Human Condition.' IOW, I may have a limited breadth of soul, but I see much Modern Art as Absurd (or Disturbing). To cut to the chase, regardless of your Religious orientation or preference, there is much sense to the range of human expression found in this book, and best of all for my money, the wonder of it all.

However, the book title is literal, it is a book of Saints represented in Art. If you're at all put off by the ubiquitous nature of bygone Catholic days, 'got enough dogma,' you may not care for this book. If you are able to look past this, you may very readily see a wide and true spectrum of views of our common Humanity.

In all Art books, I prefer the narrative not going overboard, this book does it fairly nicely. The narrative includes bio info on the Saint depicted, but it also includes helpful Art criticism that is pragmatic and avoids esoteric verbiage best kept in Graduate Studies. It's a nice quality book, but the only fault I find with it is, I wish it'd been a larger format by several inches, I prefer the Big Picture. A pretty good value.

The Art and Science of Digital Compositing, Second Edition: Techniques for Visual Effects, Animation and Motion Graphics (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics) Review

I read this book front to back in 7 days. Not that I'm an avid reader or I can read 1000s of words a minute. The content is so exceptionally good that I just could not stop letting go off the book. I think I finally found something that can replace sex. There are many masters in compositing but very few are good teachers. Ron is one of those rare Zen master's who not only realized nirvana but can also teach the ways to achieve it. Try explaining light to a blind man and you will know how difficult it becomes with words.

The patience and accuracy with which Ron has laid out the nuts and bolts of the whole process of digital compositing is rare and for loss of a better word I will call it "Excellent". I also think that amazon should incorporate another rating system that calls "SuperHero stuff" or something. There are lots of books that say push this button and select that option and fall in love with the resulting image. But when the next version of the software is released those buttons are either gone or the options have been changed completely and what not.

Anyway, if you want to go underneath the hood, and I think you should, of any modern compositing software be it nuke or after effects or fusion or katana (i heard that nuke will incorporate some of katana into their software) please look no further. Real world compositing problems are not as simple as pushing this button or that. There will be no button in any software for that matter that says "Ladies! push this button if you have an uneven greenscreen with a flickering foreground element that is heavy in motion blur". Wallah, the problem is solved, your boss is ecstatic that you won an academy award for visual effects just because of that single lovable, darling, push me again and again - button.

There is a particular way in which I use this book. Courtesy Ron again. He made a software resistant book. What I mean by that is that he will not talk about nuke or after effects in particular. Anyway, I read the book, Ron sets out to put a concept in place. Then I dig out the option or options that would lend themselves to solve that Ron's concept from the particular software Im using and give the options a good spanking, punishing or a good squeeze to; you know "Bruce Lee's Fist Of Fury" style squeeze and make them give me the codes to the zion's mainframe. And even before you know it, everything falls in place like a Brian De Palma's movie.

Goodness God I already am feeling tired writing this simple review and wondering how Ron must have squeezed the juice of digital compositing with such elegance. I need a vacation(Terminator 2).

In short "BUY THIS BOOK YOU FOOL!!!!!!".

As a college art student, I found this book to be an excellent companion to my 20th Century American Art History class. Though it lacks photos of artwork or an in-depth background surrounding the articles, it is intended for a reader with at least a basic knowledge of art history, and serves more as a thorough compilation of relevant essays by artists and art critics of the moment. This provides the reader with a more detailed perspective of the American art movements as they occurred.

I found this book to be very effective, and the articles delve into aspects of Modern Art history that are rarely discussed in detail in other books that tend to focus on the artwork itself, and less upon the artist and artwork in the historical context of the time.

'Automated Lighting' appealed to me because although I like to shoot video (interviews, documentaries, cats playing with the keyboard) I don't know enough about lighting other than what three-point lighting arrangement is. I thought I might gain some solid knowledge about video and film lighting in this book.

Well, I got that, but this book more; it is chock full of information that is particular to the professional lighting person. The picture on the cover of the book kind of tells it all: it shows a rock band hitting a crescendo, with pyrotechnics, mad guitar playing, and a ceiling full of lights.

Well, gosh, I have about as much chance at being hired to do the lighting at Kiss' next concert as Tiger Woods has at getting a marriage counseling gig. There are chapters entitled 'DMX512 and DMX512-A', and 'V-Rated Tools'. Er, no, I don't think so. But wait! There it is! Chapter 22! 'Three-Point Lighting'!

This book isn't useless for totally ignorant (about lighting) people such as me. It's just WAY more than that. There are chapters on the physics of lighting, electromechanical systems, overcurrent protection, electricity and magnetism and the like. So it is a hugely in-depth look at lighting for pretty much all venues, live, theater, and film and video.

I don't need to know how to find the capacitive reactance of a load (p 108), but some people do; those would be the professional whose business it is to light up large, or small, performances in a safe, effective way.

And yes, I did learn more about what I was interested in, the lighting of video productions. But that's a small part of the book.

This is a wonderful and hugely valuable book for those in the trade. For them, I'd give this a solid '5'. For those of us who pick it up hoping to learn a bit more about effective lighting techniques on a small scale, it's a '4'. Recommended.

Anyone interested in teaching art to children should read this book. All parents of young children should read this book. I ordered it after reading an interview with the author that was posted on the Artful Parent blog. I love how Striker explains the way children progress through their art abilities according to a developmental model. Striker stresses that children naturally do art as they are meant to and that parents don't need to show them how to do it. She does a great job explaining the difference between arts and crafts. I learned many ways to facilitate quality art experiences for my son. I feel this book has helped me foster his natural abilities and honor the artist within him, rather than trying to show him how to draw, paint, etc. Best of all, this book has helped me to relax and just have fun with art. It's even inspired me to try to create art as a child would, with no preconceived ideas about "what" i should be making. I love this book and HIGHLY recommend it. I even loaned it to my son's preschool teacher and she was so impressed with it that she told me she was going to buy her own copy!

Hearing Michael Kaiser in person is what prompted me to explore this very interesting book. Kaiser has had remarkable success in nurturing several professional arts organizations to good fiscal and organizational success.

I was part of a group of several hundred patrons and representatives of the arts to hear Mr. Kaiser interviewed by Maestro Michael Stern of the Kansas City Symphony. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect. It quickly became apparent that Kaiser is very smart, has an abundance of common sense accompanied by great instincts, and provides leadership that keeps people focused on the mission. The bulk of the interview was his "off-the-cuff" review of ten principles that have guided him in turning around struggling organizations. Also obvious, was that these ten principles apply not just to the arts but to many organizations, especially NPO's that rely on donors for their existence.

Kaiser's principles are profoundly simple, yet powerful if diligently and faithfully applied. Immediately, I ordered copies of his book for key people on a number of NPO boards on which I serve. The principles are found right up front and the rest of the book illustrates them by recounting Kaiser's personal experiences of turnarounds. I highly recommend this book.

Many arts organizations today find themselves in financial difficulties because of economic constraints inherent in the industry. While other companies can improve productivity through the use of new technologies or better systems, these approaches are not available in the arts. Hamlet requires the same number of performers today as it did in Shakespeare's time. Recently, society's resurging interest in the visual arts (and the images of popular culture) has been paralleled by a renaissance of interest in the arts among Christians. Theologians like Paul Tillich and Francis Schaeffer paved the way, and Dyrness expounds the wealth of theological justification for celebrating the beauty, creativity and imagery of art. The art world can be confusing with its proliferation of forms and styles. It is a context that does not suit modern Christians who like convincing, rational presentations. Yet it is a rich context for exploring meaning, spirituality, and worship in interactive, collaborative and visual ways. I have just start reading this book & it's very interesting,useful & a very good helper for beginners.At the same time it is a very good referance book.Some topics in this book are real nice & helpful for eg.The Mauryan period,South India,Islamic India & Jain,Rajasthani & Pahari painting.This famous book provides the widest available range of illustrated topics on art in all it's aspects.But there is something in this book which is still missing & i can not find out that what is missing?still it's a very good book for the beginners like me & i love to take refarences from this book & to use it as a course book in fine art in my college.That's only what i can say about this lovely,useful & great book.And i like to say thanks to the authur of this book that is ROY C. CRAVEN for writing such a lovely & useful book for all the art lovers.

I have given several copies to family and friends. Now I look at art books with my daughter all the time. She loves museums.

Having this book is like having your own contemporary art museum. There are established artists like Mark Ryden, who drew the cover, to exciting new talents. 95 artists contributed to the book. Each artist has a little written about them and there are a few interviews as well.

Painting is the medium of choice here. You won't see any digital works. The few categories of art here are Lowbrow, Gothic, Realism, Illustration, Character, Urban Art, Pattern and Expressionism. While many of the artists are associated with Lowbrow and Neo-Surrealism. Their take on art is one of modern perspective, drawing influences from all sorts of places. Their work in this book is timeless and a refreshing break from the multimedia commercial art scene.

The book might be pricey but it's a satisfying visual treat, great for illustrators and anyone into contemporary art.

This is a great art history textbook or supplement for a class. I have been using this book for three art history classes and it has been quite useful as a supplement to the course content. The book is well written and organized. Not only does this book cover Western art, but also Asian, African, and Native American art. Each chapter begins with a summary of the cultural history for the period and location as well as a map showing the locations discussed. Sidenotes are included in the chapters to enhance understanding of the content such as a diagram and description of the architecture for a Gothic Cathedral or how barkcloth is produced. At the end of each chapter is a brief conclusion summarizing the chapter and a full page chronological overview. There are lots of images with descriptions of the art. The detailed index allows for many ways to search for a topic. A brief glossary at the back of the book also helps explain some art terms. I have not been disappointed in my purchase of this book. In some ways, it has helped me want to learn more. I also use Janson's History of Art, The Western Tradition, which gives me additional insights on the art presented.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone studying art or wanting to learn more about it.

Well, I must confess the book itself didn't change it, but rather the whole approach to teaching that the book is about - T.A.B. I already knew quite a bit about TAB before I bought the book and by the time it arrived I was worried that it was going to be a) it too focused on elementary art programs and b) stuff I already knew.

The book did not disappoint. The focus is mostly on elementary, but not in a way that makes it useless for middle school (can't speak for highschool though). It really does focus on artistic behaviors and those carry though to the upper grades. It is concise and well organized and actually, reading it after I had already plunged into TAB was very clarifying. The book serves as a great backbone for learning about TAB.

Regarding TAB itself...OH MY I love teaching this way and I will never ever go back to teacher-directed art again unless forced to. I have feel totally reinvigorated. Behavior problems truly have decreased (though not disappeared!) and I feel like I really am grappling with the heart of what it means to be an artist instead of just controlling kids and getting them to all make essentially the same thing all at the same time.

This book gives detailed explanations about the skeleton, skeletal muscles and human morphology. Don't get rebuked by the illustration's style which was done in about yr 1889 by Paul Richer in indian ink I suppose.

Recent books like 'Strength Training Anatomy by Frederic Delavier' have more polished color illustrations and is very useful as a complement to Mr Richer chef d'oeuvre.

Last century's books about anatomy are usually better than current ones as this difficult subject was given thorough study in universities. It's easy to understand why the older generations were better figure artists!

In this book you'll find what makes up the prominences and bulges under the skin.

What could have been added though is some real photos of the nude to highlight the lights and dark of the human body.

Overall, it's a fantastic book for this price and it deserves its 5 stars!

A vast amount of money is wasted each year by students who think they need to attend an art college, only to find the fire sucked out of them. Became a trained professional in a non-professional field.
The real beauty of this book, so far, is that it discerts how the art world actually functions; not refering by way to financial power, but of the history chase and denial. It explains how, probably mostly because of Duchamp, there is a constant struggle with mentor, how this pushes art forward, and how the predators with money prey upon the artists, who by the way are not innocent. In essay form, this book will make you look differently at art education in general and the art world as a whole. I just started reading it, but know it will be an important manuscript that may push forward a change in art education on all levels.

i had the experience of being flooded with light and clarity when i first opened and browsed this book. my enthusiasm is in part because of kemp's extraordinary scholarship and detailed command of paintings and art publications across the entire span of western art. but it's also because the story of artistic imaging over the past six centuries is woven around the european romance with linear perspective, which has become so discredited and disliked by artists that it qualifies as a repressed memory. (like any buried memory, perspective surfaces in the dreamlike digital animations of intergalactic science fiction and first person computer games, which take perspective effects to the ultimate level of technical accuracy and artistic triviality.) kemp unearths those repressed perspective memories and shows how vital they were to the development of art and the connections between art and the wider culture of the times.

it is jaw droppingly fun to see how intensive, sophisticated and singleminded was the artistic interest in optical and perceptual issues of seeing. everyone will find special surprises here, but mine include kemp's spatial analysis of velazquez's "las meninas," and the extraordinary drawings and engravings produced c.1800, which force us to realize that we are already looking at "photo graphs," light drawings created by hand, at a time when film photography was not yet practical. there is a large section on various optical devices utilized in visual arts, including the camera obscura and camera lucida, and an excellent section on the evolving understanding and use of color, from the renaissance to seurat.

poignant for me was the victorian fascination with light as a spiritual quality, which comes through in turner's paintings and ruskin's amazing perspectival studies of "clouds" -- images that verge on op art. the intelligence and strength of these images reveal a road left untraveled in art, which turned toward the perceptually driven styles of impressionism and fauvism instead. as a bonus to the many interesting visual exhibits, the writing is lucid, sensible and alert. an invaluable publication.
